Healing with Voice Dialogue
Hi! Welcome to my member blog which is about getting to the heart of healing with voice dialogue. I’ve created this video blog to go along with the one under “Mind Games,” which is entitled: “You’re Not Good Enough.” I talked about how important it is for us to release this idea that we’re not good enough, to quit pursuing this ideal which is not even achievable.
The way you do that is you have to locate the voice of your critic. You know the voice that pops up for you when you do something that’s dumb or when you gain weight or when you get into a relationship that ends up breaking your heart. There’s always a voice of the critic that pops up for us when we behave in ways that are unacceptable or not “good enough.”
The Voice of the Critic
The voice of your critic shows you your spiritual wound. That’s the good news. But now we have to figure out a way to work with the voice of the critic. We have to remember that the voice of the critic’s purpose is to keep us safe. It’s criticizing us because it’s trying to get us to be good enough so that we can be safe in the world.
The problem is that the voice of the critic is separated from the wisdom of the soul. It’s operating on its own without much guidance or support. In this practice we’re going to reestablish contact between the soul and the voice of the critic, and bring the voice of the critic back into integration with the wisdom of the soul.
Soul Centering and Voice Dialogue
You can start with a Soul-Centering Practice because that helps you get in touch with your native divinity and wisdom. I have an audio file at the bottom of the page which you can use, or you can simply breathe in several times envisioning light flowing through you. Whatever you need to do to get in touch with a sense of “all is well,” that you are well and you are wise and connected to universal wisdom.
Once you’re in that place where you feel very connected to your soul’s wisdom, you invite the voice of the critic to show itself to you. You might imagine it’s showing up three or four feet in front of you. Imagine it as a person and pay attention to how it presents itself. You want to notice details, like how old is this person. Is this person male or female? Is it a person at all? What is it emoting? You’re trying to get to know the voice of the critic. You might even ask the voice of the critic what their name is.
You establish contact with this voice and, because you’re coming from the place of the soul, your energy should not be judgmental or critiquing. It should be a point of true relationship-building. You’re asking questions of this voice of the critic to understand where it’s coming from. You might ask: What are you scared of? What are you trying to accomplish? How does it feel?
The Voice of the Critic Responds
As you’re practicing this visualization the voice of the critic responds almost immediately to your attention. Its experience so far has been exile from the soul. As far as it knows, it is on its own keeping you safe, which is a heavy burden.
As the soul begins to establish this contact, notice how the voice of the critic responds. Notice how it feels as it’s beginning to explain itself, feeling like the soul is receiving it. Once you’ve got this nice exchange going and feel a pretty solid connection, usually what happens is the voice of the soul explains to the voice of the critic that it honors its intentions, that it understands it’s done a really good job keeping the person safe, and it really appreciates it. But now it’s time for the soul to take over.
Soul in Control!
The soul is going to bring the critical voice inside the soul, and let that voice rest and be at peace with the rest of the self. The soul basically encapsulates the voice so the critic no longer has to be the critic. It can just be part of the team of voices that are helping you function in the world.
I will offer this one concern because I’ve seen it happen many times. Sometimes as people practice this voice dialoguing, they discover that when they stand in the position of the soul they feel critical of the other voice. They try to straighten it out and tell it what it’s doing wrong.
If you discover that’s what’s coming up for you, then you can be sure that is not the voice of the soul. That is a different voice opposing the other voice. There are always competitions and conflicts inside of the human psyche. Sometimes we mistake the voice of the “righteous” voice with the voice of the soul. The truth is the voice of the soul is never judging, it’s never critical, it’s always loving, always inclusive, always healing. If you start communicating judgment or conflict, you know you’re actually not in soul-voice mode.
Reach Out for Help!
This practice is actually pretty simple to do once you get the hang of it, but it is a bit tough at first especially if you don’t have a lot of experience with visualization or with working with your soul-voice. If you find that you’re trying to do this practice but you can’t feel healing or compassion or loving toward yourself, then let me know about that. We’ll definitely work together. Please feel free to write your comments down, your experiences using this practice. I hope this will be a really helpful tool for you as it is for me. Talk to you soon. Bye!
