Problem #1: People Need Rescuing!
Hi! Welcome to the first video of the series I’m entitling “People Problems.” Today we are looking at the “Superhero Syndrome.” There comes a time in our lives when we are poised for change. We are ready to be healed and to release limiting beliefs, and to commit ourselves to moving forward in our expansion of the soul.
But just before we take that step forward, we look around ourselves and we see all these people who seem to be stuck in the same situation that we are escaping. So we focus our attention on them. We decide that we are going to bring them with us. We’re going to rescue them – like a superhero!
First Challenge: You Don’t Know How to Recue Other People
As human being we are all incredibly complex and shrouded in mystery. Which is to say that no one can tell on the surface what is going on beneath the surface. Instead we have to recognize that each person has their own set of gifts and challenges, and their own work in the world. And each person has their own spiritual integrity which is creating the right path for them.
From our perspective on the physical level, we cannot know which actions are helpful or hurtful. Which means you don’t even know that rescue’s the right thing for them.
Second Challenge: Rescuing Somebody Else Doesn’t Work
Even if you do somehow know exactly what someone needs, that doesn’t mean that you can do it. If you do manage to “rescue” somebody, all you’re doing is temporarily pulling them out of their discomfort. Eventually your power will have to come back to you, and they’ll be left in the same situation they were in before.
People grow and expand not by others doing their work for them, but by their getting in touch with their own power, bringing it to the surface of their awareness, and creating the lives they want. Sometimes that that process involves discomfort or even pain. Everyone has a right to their own power. They may have to go through discomfort, but ultimately they clam control of their own lives, with the power to rescue themselves. If we honor that work, we must stay out of the rescuing business.
Third Challenge: It’s a Distraction!
To me the biggest problem with the “superhero syndrome” is that it is a mental manipulation which keeps us from doing our own work. The mind operates from the perspective of the mental energy field, and the mental energy field is invested in us staying the same. It wants us to live in the patterns we already have because those patterns are predictable and familiar, and that means that it’s keeping us safe.
The mental energy field will use any argument it can to stop us when we’re about to change and expand. A very tempting argument is that we are selfless and compassionate when we pour our energy into “saving” somebody else. The truth is of course, as I’ve already said, giving energy to somebody else in that way does not make their lives better. It just leaves them in the same position they were in before. What it really accomplishes is distracting us from doing the work that could actually make a difference in the world.
Where Our Super Powers REALLY Shine!
The most power we have is in authoring our own lives, pouring power into our own lives. When we don’t do that we am depriving the world of the only real gift we have – ourselves. If it’s true that we really are compassionate, that we want other people to be stronger and healthier and abundant, then the best thing we can do is our own work.
If I want other people to be healed I must become a healed person, and offer myself as an example of what is possible. If I want other people to be free of poverty then I have to invest in the experience of my own abundance. Not only do I become an example for other people, which is already pretty important, but also I’m raising the energetic frequency of the world around me. In the last video we talked about Systems Theory, and how we as human beings are all connected. When one of us moves the rest of us are impacted by that move.
That’s true here as well. When I live in abundance and healing then I am changing the energetic forces around other people. I’m creating opportunity and possibility where there wasn’t opportunity and possibility before. I’m making a way where there used to be no way. If I really want other people to be free and empowered, that’s my best shot at it – create a supportive environment for them to claim their own power. That way each of us can be our own superheroes!
